What is a Nuc?
A Nuc, or Nucleus Hive, has a smaller colony of bees than a standard 8-frame or 10-frame hive. Bee Sanctuary Nucs are not made from “splits,” but are made and monitored in nuc boxes either over Winter or during Spring. Nucs are sold in a cardboard, wax-coated box and hold five frames of pollen, food, brood, and room for the queen to lay.
The benefit of a Nuc compared to getting a package of bees is that Nucs keep the colony focused since there is reduced room in the Nuc box. It allows the bees to focus on strength and for the queen to lay more brood.
